I've seen videos of people who've trained their pets (both cats and dogs) to "clip" their own nails. The basic set up is either a ramp covered in sandpaper or a rotary tool with a conical sandstone. The animal then holds its paw over the sandstone until he is done. The ramp option is completely self-serve.

Pets can be trained to do all sorts of self grooming. My brother's bulldog had a towel that he used to wipe his face after food and water. Nobody had to clean him :)
