You said we did nothing and still won the cold war and suggest doing nothing will result in another win. The cold war ended after they had free elections. We had nothing to do with it. Communists lost the election, the USSR flag came down and the Russian flag went up. I know your version of history is based on what you lived, but it doesn't seem true.

Gorbachev knew his system was collapsing and also knew capitalism was better. We led by example but it was more than that. They needed someone in the USSR who was willing to do something about it. One can assume he thought (at one point) he'd be reelected by a landslide but the people didn't trust communism or communists. I have my own ideas of how and why that changed.

Evil needs to be confronted. The fascists in the gop want a dictator like Putin. Waiting for them to get power and hoping they do the right thing seems less than ideal.
