Microsoft confirmed yesterday that Office 98 "released to manufacturing" on January 30. "We typically figure 6 to 8 weeks for manufacturing and shipping to distributors, so we're telling people to expect retail availability in late March."

We posted Ed Schaider's evaluation of an MS Office 98 pre-release yesterday, and Martin Brown followed up with two more observations:

1."Although there are 4MB of 'extensions' in the System folder, they are not actually extensions, nor do they actually have to be there. They can be in the Microsoft Office folder without any detrimental effects."

2."Launching times were 18 seconds for Word from Office 4.2.1 on my 6400/200, just under 5 seconds for Word 98."
