Education can't make a person more intelligent.

You clearly underestimated your abilities at one time. Education gave you tools to analyze and think and made you more assured in your abilities, but education never made you more intelligent.

Being smart is not a guarantee of academic success or career success, as diligent work is required in addition to simply being intelligent.

Wealthy parents can give their dim children the veneer of an education graduating them as Tim Nice But Dim or Pierce Nothing Between The Ears or Dick Friendly But Thick. And you can make a career of that, but I wouldn't hire them for most things.
