I'm a big fan of Dan O. Thanks for sharing that. But I'm also biased as he lives around the corner from me and is one of our LL coaches. Super nice guy and even better father of four, always playing with them, walking them to school, etc. It's been fun watching him get more acclaimed each year. I know ESPN just locked him up for another three years. Someone to root for, for sure!

What did he do, take a shortcut behind the end zone?

Funny story but I would like to hear the coach's side. Dan seems to think the only reason he got a 'ship was his forty time. Or that a bad time would have kept him from getting one. I think if I am coaching a team like Conn I know I'm not getting a QB with Mike Vick's running ability. Those guys are long gone to a Big Ten or other Power Five school.

I would be happy with a guy that has NFL size and a good arm. Dan put up good numbers in high school. A local guy too. Get a guy like that in and teach him how to be a better QB. If it doesn't work out...oh well. You would be surprised at the number of 4 and 5 star QB that never make it big in college. A two star has little expectations. In this case Coach was right. If anything he probably tried to keep it quite so bigger schools wouldn't come in at the last second and try to steal him.

So if he ran the race honestly and was over 5 would it have changed the opinion of the coach? We'll never know. I think not. Had he watched any of his film he could have seen he wasn't a burner. And who really expects a 6'4 guy to have track speed? You want your speed guys to be the WR, RB, and CB. A 5.5 WR would probably be a no go. Other things come in play too. Like strength, quickness, and ability to run the correct route.

And to his last point of not having another offer. Happens all the time. At least an offer to a major school. Kids can really change between 16 and 24. Some get taller and stronger. Some take the opportunity seriously and work hard in the weight and film room, while others party or don't study enough. And just having the opportunity to play means a lot. Had Dan went to a Big Ten school and became the 3rd or 4th QB most of his 4 years chances are good he never sniffs the NFL. Playing helped him. Lot more 2 and 3 star high school players in the NFL than 5 star. Probably because there are a lot fewer 5 star guys, but stars doesn't mean everything in football.
