I believe a more likely outcome might be the addition of mini-split high efficiency heat pumps to homes with gas furnaces. Some models by Fujitsu and Mitsubishi are capable of providing heat to around 15 degrees below zero (F), though at lower efficiency rates. They would typically be used to provide heat down to around 32 degrees (F) and save the gas furnace use for really cold weather thus reducing overall natural gas use during the heating system.

These systems also have the benefit of providing very efficient air conditioning in the summer, which is an advantage as air conditioning is not as common in Europe and will be needed as the world continues to bake.
