The thing about out rain is that it came, and then it went. Also, it was moving W to E, and blew that bad air back to Stinkadena, er, Pasadena.

Siemens Nixdorf Joins 3Com's POS Partners Program to Deliver Industry Leading Networked POS Solution

Wednesday, February 11, 1998 12:02 PM

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 11, 1998--3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) and Siemens Nixdorf Information Systems, Inc. (SNI) today announced an alliance that combines the benefits of 3Com's Point of Sale (POS) Partners Program and award-winning store network products with SNI's POS hardware, retail application software, and professional services.

Under the alliance, Siemens will deploy 3Com's Total Control(TM) remote access concentrators, network interface cards (NICs), SuperStack(R) II family of PS Hubs, Ethernet and ATM switches, and frame relay routers as part of Siemens' retail systems architecture.

"Many of our customers have already standardized on 3Com products because of their excellent reliability, performance, and manageability for their POS and in-store networks," said Jan Andersson, vice president of retail systems at Siemens Nixdorf. "By joining 3Com's POS Partners Program, we can now offer our customers a more comprehensive networked solution with the best price/performance in the industry."

Very large-format store retailers, such as department stores and hypermarkets, have more complex requirements for networked POS solutions than most other retailers. These larger POS solutions must deliver extensive scalability, future-proofing, fault-tolerance, and remote manageability. POS networks must be affordable today, yet provide a smooth and cost-effective migration to faster technologies that are capable of supporting bandwidth-intensive store applications.

Many of the world's largest-format retailers, including The Home Depot, Ross Stores, Hudson's Bay, and Harrods in the UK, have already deployed large-scale POS and back-office store networks based on 3Com products and technologies.

"Siemens Nixdorf has extensive expertise and professional services capabilities that are vital to the success of large-scale networked POS deployments," said Jeff Siegel, retail industry group manager for 3Com. "This alliance ensures that retailers get more than award-winning products; they get a comprehensive networked solution designed specifically for their requirements."

3Com's POS Partners Program was developed to deliver comprehensive end-to-end networked POS solutions working together with POS vendors, systems integrators, and application vendors. The program brings together the industry's only single-vendor portfolio of network products, which constitute a complete networked POS solution. The 3Com single-vendor solution greatly simplifies network support for retailers, ensuring the highest degree of product integration and POS application performance while offering the industry's highest degree of network scalability and store network management.

"With our network specialists fully trained on 3Com's products, they can develop sophisticated network designs specific to the unique requirements of each customer while ensuring the lowest cost of ownership, true fault-tolerant network infrastructure, and a high degree of investment protection in POS and in-store network architecture," stated SNI's Andersson.
