Both targeted innocent citizens.

If we wouldn't do either today, and we wouldn't, because it is uncivilized, how can anyone make an argument it was the right thing to do in 1945?

We already had them beat. A siege would have worked with few innocents being killed.

Because I've seen numerous long articles on the subject and I'm too lazy to type out that much. FWIW, I think there were alternatives that would have been unpleasant to marine life in Tokyo Bay, but once there is a shiny new toy, people tend to use it.
