Had the same experience with one of my closest old friends and never spoke of it again. Like you, to do so would serve no positive end and would hurt his family unnecessarily. I think he simply confused gender because of love and admiration and/or had a leaning towards bisexuality. He died about a year ago and I remain close to his children and widow.
