To those who wondered why Pieper left CPQ;

PHILIPS TO GIVE ROEL PIEPER A HIGH POST Wednesday, February 11, 1998

Philips will soon recommend the appointment of Roel Pieper to its
management board, a source close to the Eindhoven-based electronics
concern said on Tuesday. A spokesman for Philips' supervisory board
declined to comment.
Pieper stepped down last month as senior vice president of US
computer company Compaq, the world's biggest producer of personal
computers. Several weeks earlier, Pieper had held talks with Philips
president Cor Boonstra about a management position. Philips declined
all comment at the time.
Pieper, 41, is seen as being capable of taking over the helm from
Boonstra, who said four years ago when he joined Philips that he
was not planning to stay for long. Pieper is in the Netherlands
today (Wednesday) to present a plan together with economic affairs
minister Hans Wijers aimed at stimulating the creation of new
businesses in the information and communication technology
sector. The ex-Compaq chief will play a key role in the programme.
