I haven't read the article yet.

But, Intel is getting aggressive in Flash - refurbishing Fab 9 with a Billion Dollars of new 0.25 micron gear.

Using their Strataflash technology (2 bits/Flash cell) and 0.25 micron process, Intel should easily reduce their costs-per-bit by 50% to 75%.

With a commanding technology lead and manufacturing process advantages (small feature size and high yields) Intel is in a much better position than in 1984-85 when they withdrew from the DRAM business.
They are a leader in Flash technology and flash production - not a follower.
