About UAN; "...MLP tax free distributions (don't sell at all)"

Regarding UAN in taxable account:

It may be that the distributions are tax-free if you never sell. Otoh, there still may be taxes that have to be paid. As the distributions lower the tax-basis, if/when the tax basis becomes 0, then there's a capital gain that's taxable on any further distributions. I don't believe it can be deferred or avoided, but I'm no tax expert.

I don't have any experience with the tax treatment between income reported and distributions paid for UAN. Unlike UAN, with pipeline mlp's there's so much depreciation that income become negligible compared to distributions. (No "income" taxes to worry about).

UAN has plants in two states. At some point, those states will tax UAN unit holders. On income the company reports? On distributions the company makes? Never, if the stockholder (unitholder) dies and the heirs receive the UAN mlp units)? I do not know. I'm betting on no free lunch though: somewhere along the line, some taxes on UAN will have to be paid.

Jmo.
(I have a substantial UAN position.)
