<A> Advanced Micro/Alcatel -2: Advanced Micro Gets ADSL Tech

AUSTIN, Texas (Dow Jones)--Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) acquired a license to Alcatel's technology for providing high-speed Internet access and voice traffic over the same standard telephone line.

Terms weren't disclosed.

In a press release Thursday, Advanced Micro said the license entitles it to manufacture Alcatel's digital subscriber line discrete multitone technology, or ADSL DMT, for both full-rate and lower-rate applications.

Advanced Micro expects products made under the license to be available in the 1998 second half.

Alcatel's ADSL technology is integrated in network architecture based on asynchronous transfer mode, a modem interface standard.

Alcatel is the telecommunications unit of France's Alcatel-Alsthom SA (ALA).

Advanced Micro makes integrated circuits and other computer and telecommunications gear.
