Mr. LaStella explained that higher temperatures downstream in
the exhaust system are indicative of wasted fuel that has reached
the exhaust system after escaping the combustion chamber. When
I was a racer several years ago, a spectator told me "That thing
really sounds awesome!", referring to the sound of my exhaust
when I would back off the throttle. Well, all that awesome noise
was just wasted fuel exploding in the exhaust pipe. Of course, I was
tuning for maximum power, not fuel economy. Dr. Diesel's basic
engine premise is that the heat of compression ignites the mixture.
Therefore sparkplugs are unnecessary. However, true diesel engines
must be built strong and heavy to withstand the stress of this process.
When passenger cars have diesel engines, they are sometimes
converted from gasoline engines which are not as rugged as they should be and lack the truly high compression ratios of a real diesel. Therefore, they use glowplugs. And, when you speak of burning
holes in pistons, well, been there, done that. You can tell what is
happening in a gasoline engine by reading the spark plugs. You
will see tiny balls of aluminum *throw-off* if you are way too lean.
But a better tuner would have noticed little black specks on the
porcelain first, as he was *gradually* leaning the jetting down for
optimum power mixture. I wish I could read the stock market the
way I can read a spark plug. I would know which way to tune my
finances.
