You are right. The Normans were just Vikings with a French accent. Mind you, William the First was named "William the Bastard" before he got his later titles. The reason being, he was a bastard. His early years were being taunted by all his non bastard relatives and other social contacts. He probably had a rough time of it as a kid. This stood him in good stead later in life.

His luck later improved when all his relatives died from a plague, and he was the sole survivor to the family estate.

Odd how the conquered country is still referred to as "England" & is "Anglo Saxon" even though it's still run and owned by Normans. Maybe an early PR campaign after the Doomsday book had been completed. "Hey, it's still your country ... England". -g-

Later the land owned by the Normans ("Normanland"?) became Anglicized, as did the Normans... a bit like Africanized European Honeybees, much to the regret of everyone since.
