doing what's best for your country only typically entails that Devil Take the Hindmost mentality.. It is tribal of course and certainly not good holistic view of what is good for humanity in general.. but more like Mq's view that the Blacks in the US are lucky for their better fortunes in present day.. despite the horrors and suffering it inflicted on their antecedents I agree with you for a species the best choice should always be for the most winners now... the folks buying slaves were not planning on a brighter future for their (the slaves) progeny :)
