In 1818 Hongi Hika led one of two Ngapuhi taua against East Cape and Bay of Plenty iwi Ngati Porou and Ngaiterangi. The taua returned in 1819 carrying nearly 2,000 captured slaves. And killed a lot more. They didn't have refrigerators so to keep dinner fresh, they would cut archilles tendons to cripple their prisoners and keep them alive until hunger called. But in fairness, New Zealand was not a country in 1819. There were many tribes of cannibals who had staked out various areas to hold by genocidal conquest over the previous 500 years since Maoris arrived from Rarotonga [in Cook Islands] as part of the Polynesian migrations to Hawaii, Easter Island, Tahiti, Samao, Tonga and the rest. Maoris had started trading with the English visitors giving land and products to them in exchange for guns and whatever. Hongi Hika and others were happy to get the English living beside them [for access to the good stuff] and use the weapons to massacre many thousands to acquire more land and resources and just for the fun of killing and conquest It was only in 1840 that most Maori tribes' chiefs decided that it was a bad situation and better to sign up to the Great and Glorious British Empire. Before that, cannibalism and slavery was normal. Even after 1840 Maoris didn't stop. For example Taranaki Maoris went by English ship to Chatham Islands and set about murdering and enslaving and eating the local population aka Moriori. Maoris also conducted other attacks around the country. I think the Tuhoe tribe never did sign up so theoretically, they are not part of New Zealand [one could sort of claim]. But the treaty was a hopeless document and idea which supposed [generally] that Maoris would remain tribal in their respective areas. Of course intermarriage/breeding, migration, comingling and technology and political improvements/changes meant the agreement was obsolete by the 20th century. For example, Great Britain and the British Empire ceased to exist as the counter-party. Queen Victoria died. So did subsequent Kings/Queen. Now Aotearoa-Zimbabwe is an independent country with the sole connection to UK being King Charles Spaniel. There is much talk of becoming a republic. It has pretty much already happened = a banana republic. The racist apartheid treaty of Waitangi idea had a pretty short use-by date. I have a Maori grand daughter. Hordes of people are co-mingled. Having a Master Race of Maoris is absurd. In recent decades the obsolete treaty has been adopted and expanded in fantasy ways to pretend it meant more than what it did. The idea that Great Britain murdered their way to conquest and possession in New Zealand is absurdly false. Of course there were trivially small military actions numbering in the 10s of casualties among the Maori/English combatants, but there was no mass murder or millions killed as in other wars such as WWI, WWII, 1812 Overture, Crimean War, Boer War, Franco-Prussian war. The Maori on Maori wars were far greater than the British/NZ vs Maori conflicts. Mqurice
