Ericsson Signs $200 Million D-AMPS Agreement in Venezuela STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 11, 1998--Ericsson has signed a $200 million framework agreement with Telecomunicaciones Movilnet in Venezuela for the digitalization and expansion of their wireless network using D-AMPS IS-136 technology. This is the largest contract ever signed by Movilnet, the only operator in the country offering digital wireless services. The company has already introduced digital PCS features, including Short Message services and Calling Number Identity. Capacity will be increased in the major cities and digitalization will subsequently be achieved in Movilnet's nationwide network. Migration to the D-AMPS IS-136 wireless standard will provide benefits in three major areas. It will allow Movilnet to launch advanced intelligent network services; provide improved voice quality, through the introduction of new signal handling technology; and with extensive use of efficient radio techniques, it will increase the number of subscribers the networks can accommodate within the existing frequency bands. Movilnet, with its selection of D-AMPS, is a member of the global community of wireless network operators in 35 countries, with 8 million subscribers, using the same standard. It includes all of Latin America, the US and Canada, as well as several countries in the Asia Pacific region. Global roaming agreements are increasingly being set up between these operators, to give subscribers -- such as travelling business people -- seamless access to their mobile phone services as they travel internationally. The digitalization of Movilnet's network in Venezuela has been achieved quickly and economically by simply swapping analog radio channels for digital channels. There are approximately 80 million subscribers using D-AMPS/AMPS networks worldwide. D-AMPS was the first technology to be commercially available as a dual-band (800/1900 MHz) and dual-mode (analog/digital) technology. 8 million subscribers are already using D-AMPS digital services. Ericsson's 100,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries. Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones and infocom systems makes Ericsson a world-leading supplier in telecommunications.
