Alex, I am having a horrible time getting onto SI, and AOL is no better than Earthlink. Both seem slow, and then broken, and I get bumped off. I have not even read Feelings, but if there are clouds scudding across the thread I will have to see about turning them into something resembling sunshine when I am working again, technically speaking.

Did I say that Islamic extremism sometimes might seem like a good idea? I am afraid to try something as delicate as doing any clicking around, so I didn't reread my post, but what I remember saying about Islamic extremism is that (1) I think it is short-lived, in that more moderate governments seem to take over because the population does not really want to live under than much control, and (2) our pretty much staunch and unconditional support of Israel, which is like a thorn in the side of the Arabs, is a primary cause of polarization so serious that fundamentalist states can exist. I definitely do not in any way advocate Islamic extremism.

My own personal belief about Saddam is that any government which does not want to annihilate others with biological weapons would be better. I also think Iraq is such a poor nation right now, so depleted, that a new government would be preoccupied with rebuilding the society. Since Saddam definitely hates the Jews, and is trying to destroy them, I don't see what is wrong with taking a gamble that a new government might be better. I don't see that much to lose!
