Okay. Naive question: Why the fat dividend payout? Typically small companies with zero earnings do not pay dividends, so clearly I missed that.

Even the great Mickey Mouse company DIS stopped paying dividends when it was clear that Covid would interfere with their earnings.

XOM, née Standard Oil of New Jersey, kept paying dividends during Covid, when people severely cut back on their driving habits, but instead of cutting dividends, they stopped matching their employees deposits to their IRAs/retirement plans. It cut expenses in a similar way as Disney stopping dividends, but didn’t scare off the traditional widows and orphans investment funds that typically hold Exxon stock.

Mind you, XOM has made out like bandits since people started traveling again after Covid fears waned, and the war in Ukraine hasn’t poured oil on the waters in a way that would sooth energy supply jitters, especially in Europe.

Meanwhile, back to my point.

Why did this non profitable stock pay out a cash dividend, and when, and how did it affect the stock price?

For what it’s worth, I go by the Yahoo stock finance prices for the contest, and do not take dividends into account in terms of the portfolio standings. Most biotechs do not pay dividends, and although big pharmas typically do, I’ve never seen anyone in the contest ask that their dividends be reinvested. I sincerely ask that none of you ever make such a request, as I’d say no, too much work.
