My take is they're good enough for Trent Reznor who is VERY knowledgeable about music tech, synths, boards etc. One of the first to use Protool files where he'd send one to his drummer who would add his stuff sent it to the guitarist, then to the bass, then back to Trent... layers and layer. I think AtoDs and visa versa are fairly generic now days. Microphones etc introduce far more distortion.
