In many tests, an identical, unmodified "control" is used for comparison, but in this case there was no control example. However, I have little doubt that the Geo Metro has been quite thoroughly tested for economy of operation, and that this information could be found simply by researching the literature available. This would certainly spare BAT the expense of buying a control car and having it sit around unused. And I suppose that the critics could say that BAT had purposely tampered with the control to sell their technology. I guess they could rent one, but wouldn't some say that BAT got a non-representative unit, a *dog*, so to speak? They just can't win, can they? Ron Holland told me that the reason that particular Yanmar model was chosen for modification was that it had the best specific fuel consumption of any model in the catalog. Specific fuel consumption is measured in pounds per brake horsepower per hour. If you know the weight of the fuel, you can determine this figure in dyno operation and tune your engine for optimum mileage at the cruising rpm. Mr. Holland told me that if he was going for a record attempt, he wanted to start with the best available engine and go from there. As we all departed the track last night, Joe LaStella was talking of returning in a month to try again. I noticed that the article in the online Los Angeles Times today had another interesting announcement. Right under the BAT article there was one about Lee Iaccoca's electric bicycle company making an agreement with Stemple to manufacture electic bikes. BAT Electrobike is in the same business, and they might get marketshare down the road a piece.
