[ADSL and DSP]

First to your question about standard ADSL. When TXN bought Amati they bought their ADSL technology which includes the ANSI/ETSI standard for their DMT line code. Any decision by this recently-formed consortium will be standard-compliant, if not at the outset then further down the road. The standard, full-speed, ADSL/DMT is compliant as it is --- it is the standard --- that was decided I believe in '93 and whatever amendments have been made since have kept the integrity of the original. Companies already licensing are: MOT, ADI, Alcatel, NEC, Nortel, Pairgain, and before the buyout, TXN. SGS Thomson was negotiating a license when the buyout occured. I don't know the status now. Many companies obtain standard-compliance by buying chips from any of these I've listed. Siemens, for example, hasn't licensed but is using AMTI/TXN techology through a partnership agreement, which I believe involves the C6X.

To read about ADSL, go to: adsl.com

or alcatel.com (and do ADSL search).

Now, to a different topic. Check out a small pure-play DSP company that is also developing products based on the C6X. Their earnings came out tonight and are far higher than anticipated.

Spectrum hired one of TI's top marketing directors, Ron Wages, to head up their marketing about a year ago and the two companies maintain close ties. In fact, if you check TI's website, you can do a Spectrum Signal Processing search and read a long list of products.

ti.com

That should keep you busy for a while. :)

Later --

[Another ADSL/DMT licensee]

This time through Alcatel:

<<<<<
AUSTIN, TEXAS, U.S.A., 1998 FEB 12 (NB) -- Telecom Roundup. Advanced Micro Devices Inc. [NYSE:AMD] said it entered into a collaboration with Alcatel to license and manufacture Alcatel's ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) DMT (Discrete Multitone) technology for both "full-rate" and forthcoming ADSL "Lite" products.

Officials from both companies said the alliance increases the availability of Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) products for the global telecommunications market.

Under the agreement, AMD will license and produce Alcatel's industry- standard ADSL DMT technology. ADSL technology provides simultaneous high-speed Internet access and voice traffic carried over the same telephone line, officials said. Alcatel's ADSL technology is integrated in a network architecture based on ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode).
