If I was backed into a corner and my enemies were interfering in my plans I would not hesitate to lob a few nukes. If you create a situation where Putin has nothing to lose it will quickly escalate.
Russia isn’t backed into a corner. Once again, Putin told the truth - they’re just getting started. 300K mobilized, 70K volunteers, plus some others - the number of their personnel in Ukraine is about to triple.

Did you notice the infrastructure bombings in recent days? Question - why now? Why not a month or 6 months ago?

A: they didn’t want to do it. Now, they’ve accepted the fact that facing the Ukrainian military, armed with everything the West can throw at them - they’ll have to change the character of the war.

That is very tragic for the Ukrainian people, but - since there is no one willing to negotiate with their interests in mind, the resolution will have to be a victory - or defeat - on the battlefield.

If a situation is created where Russia isn't going to win, that doesn't suggest Russia having nothing to lose. That's true in general but also specifically in the case of nuclear weapons usage Russia has a lot to lose. It would destroy any chance of eventually normalizing relations with the western countries for a long time, and would push countries on the fence to be more against Russia. It would also create a situation where countries around the world go hard for nuclear weapons and non-proliferation goes out the window. None of that is in Russia's interest. It's not in Putin's interest if he cares about Russia, or even cares about the power and influence he gets from leading Russia.
