Australia’s Hydrogen Industrial StrategyOctober 14, 2021This commentary is part of Energy Rewired , a project from the CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program studying the industrial strategies of major economies for the energy transition. The project examines countries’ big bets on emerging energy technologies and how these will rewire the world’s energy map. Key Points Australia aims to become a “major player” in global hydrogen production and trade by 2030 and has produced a thorough policy roadmap in support of this goal. The government is helping to fund a variety of demonstration projects and “hydrogen hubs” that it hopes will prove its potential in the emerging technology, and it currently has the second-highest capacity of zero-carbon hydrogen projects in development globally. As a land-abundant nation with significant renewable energy resource potential and complementary resource extraction industries, the Australian government believes it is well positioned to take advantage of significant increases in expected demand for clean hydrogen, particularly in proximate Asian markets. The Australian economy is more reliant on carbon-intensive industries, such as coal mining and liquified natural gas exports, than most of its Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development peers. While reducing its carbon emissions and meeting its Paris Agreement commitment are included as goals in its strategy, its primary motivation for a hydrogen industrial strategy is to create jobs, attract investment, and open new export markets, especially as demand for its fossil fuel exports falls over time. As a liberal market economy with a right-leaning governing party, its strategy relies on public-private partnerships over quantitative targets and clear mandates. In particular, the strategy puts a strong emphasis on working with industry to develop regional hydrogen hubs of large-scale demand, connected infrastructure, and export potential.Analysiscsis.org Answer to Energy Storage Problem Could Be Hydrogen - NRELnrel.gov Jun 25, 2020 — Hydrogen has the greatest potential among technologies for seasonal energy storage in the future, according to an analysis conducted by ...
