Many moons ago. I boarded a bus at the ferry port from Ireland bound for Glasgow and thought the people on it were speaking another language. The accent was that thick.

The Canadian French accents are almost comically different. Listening to sports coverage (hockey, football) in French is weird enough, but hearing it in Canadian French is a hoot.

I got by with my generic American school French around Quebec most of the time. They were kind and patient. They also spoke French in return, which most French people will not now with tourists.
