Well…. That’s the hellish thing about existential threats - when it happens, all “normal” bets are off.

This duality of vision may yet bring this world to an end.

China will go to war - even nuclear global war - before they “accept defeat” and allow Taiwan to break away. The integrity of their empire - which is cobbled together from 100 smaller nationalities and languages - is of extreme importance to them. If they start letting them go - the whole thing will fall apart. It will be back to wars between the tribes.

To us, it’s bullsh*t. To them it isn’t.

Same with Russia - becoming a bunch of several powerless colonies controlled by the U.S. and NATO is not a world they want to live in.

It’s important to listen to what our “enemies” are saying. Our survival depends on it.

What Russia will win is holding the line against horrible murdering Americans.

Vladimir and Russia wouldn't have cared if Ukraine had happily just carried on running itself. But Obama the Warmonger, Joe10%, Hunter and all wanted loot and conquest.

Rather than wait to be kicked out of Crimea, then have rockets and everything coming out of Crimea Donetsk etc straight up into Russia, Russia accepted they either collapsed into surrender or fought back.

You are confused by the lies. Russia isn't gaining anything, they are avoiding losing everything.

Now USA has to decide whether to experience MAD. It seems they will choose that option.

Even if Russia "wins" militarily, what will the cost have been? 10's of thousands of casualties,

In case you have not noticed most of the troops Putin has sent in are on the same level as the mental patients and criminals Castro sent to Florida years ago.

$billions in equipment destroyed or consumed,

It was all old stuff that needed replacing, trouble for Putin is Russia is not fast on replacing.

continuing sanctions, and perhaps most important a huge loss of military reputation.

Russia can deal with losing KFC and McDonalds'

Who will fear Russia in the next 10-20 years?

I think more than we realize, Putin is concerned how he will look 2000 years from now.

What will they gain?

Russia will gain what they had under their wing before, the bread basket of the world, Ukraine.

Control of a little territory which they bombed to rubble.

Putin doesn't care if the towns and cities are inhabited again, as long as the farms produce grain.

That is a big cost for a war of choice.
