Wharfie, We've had a lot of proxy wars with Russia, including Korea. Korea is actually a great analogy, except that we actually had UN boots on the ground. Truman also limited the scope of the Korean War because of the fears over WWIII. MacArthur was relieved of command because of disagreements over the war's escalation. Truman may have made the right decision at the time, and MacArthur may have made a grave military mistake when he did his "Home By Christmas" campaign. But we're still paying the price of said limited war today, as you can see from North Korea being much more belligerent than ever before with no obvious path toward de-escalation. Tenchusatsu
