You are mistakenly thinking "Ukrainians" are homogeneous fungible people. Apparently, the only thing viewed by Ukrainians as worse than war is peace under Russian dictatorship. The Zelensky corruptocrats in the west are quite different from the Russians in the east. The Russians in the east prefer to be part of Russia, whereas the people in the west prefer to have their hand in the pockets of the USA and Eurostan. Joe10% and Hunter were very happy to oblige. Americans galore flooded to Ukraine to get a piece of the action = umpty$billions gusher of loot. To help you think of the difference, The Sioux in the west were different from the Pilgrims in the east, were different from the Irish in Ireland were different from the English Etonians were different from King George II.
