I went fishing recently at a big lake in Virginia, Smith Mountain Lake. I was fishing off a dock with
nighcrawlers. Right at daybreak. I got the kind of byte you get with big catfish. I hooked it and
it felt strong but I was figuring 5 lbs or so, not that big. Then, I realized the thing was coming in kind
of without resistance. Then when it got within 5 ft of the dock, maybe down 5 ft deep, it was the
most violent explosive move I had ever had and it broke my line. I don't think the drag had time to
work. The rod doubled over and nearly broke. To tell you the truth, I am not sure it was even a fish.
It moved faster than any big catfish I have every caught. It may have been a big striper. That kind
of wet my appetitie to do some fishing again.
