The beauty of the tariff approach is to make the Chinese feel that pinch first, pass it on to the consumers, who then find competitive alternatives here and build our own supply chains back up.

One of the stated reasons for the tariffs on the cheap consumer goods is to get the labor standards higher in China - so if the tariffs get reduced by implementation of better standards, then they'll probably have to charge more anyway. That way, the US supply side isn't going to feel a big pinch with the easing of tariffs. There will be a higher income for workers in China, so their companies may have increased local product demand.

All the boats start to float higher and everyone is happier - except Nancy and Paul.

Sensitive technology exports probably shouldn't be allowed in the first place.

Tariffs are not the same as sanctions.
