ALL the innovation and growth for the next 100 years will be in renewables. They are already cheaper for added capacity, and it will only get better because it is technology based. It's not going to be nearly as sweeping or quick as e.g. mobile phone adoption, because it simply can't. Now is the time for modest deployment and serous research. Failure to adapt will leave us wanting. But historically, that's actually what always happens, the entrenched money machines make sure to purchase mind share necessary to squeeze out every buck regardless of the long term damage they do to the prospects of the country, and atypically (from an historical perspecting) in this case to maximize damage to the environment including ancillary long term damage to ourselves.

Oil will be needed for air travel, plastics and esp. pharmaceuticals for many years. One only hopes the deluded do not prevent this from happening.
