China doesn't want war, but they want fealty, or at the very least, the highest respect. They found ways to get it - bribes, (possible) election interference, police stations abroad for Chinese nationals, spying, and IP theft and strong-arm tactics for businesses manufacturing or selling in China.

Outsmart the other guy - look, over there - a squirrel! Using our systems and methods against us.

Your quote reminded me of the Princess Bride - the movie that keeps on giving, meme-wise.

"My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." They became friends.

Found a great post on the process of doing biz in China. (h/t FR1)

I've seen knockoffs of things like outboard engines. I've heard stories that the original manufacturer's casting marks have been duplicated - they didn't bother to grind them off.

Probably happens on chip level as well, but on the board level - well, I've also heard stories of modems being added. Graduating from theft to spying.

Seems like sanctions are close to theft. I prefer tariffs. And outsmarting the other guys...
