Question: Is there a significant barrier to entry into the on-line book business?

My gut answer is: none that a large company could not leap with its eyes closed.

But then again Borders has been working on their web site for several months now, and it is still not up there.

I would say that anyone wishing to compete with Amazon today would require several million dollars in software and equipment, but what is more important, 50 to a 100 million dollars to spend in advertising, exclusivity deals, book reviews, author appearance fees, etc.

That is a substantial barrier to entry. One that can only be overcome by B&N, Borders, Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo and other big time players...
