We were taught to pray and thank G-d for everything we had received, including food, water and air. It was considered bad form to pray for material things, even when the family farmed no one ever prayed for good weather only the abundant blessing they had received by just being alive. We were even taught to offer up our suffering to G-d as a penance. I have no doubt that being raised this way is why most of us succeeded in business and are usually the last ones to give up.
