Yes, when I graduated from Stanford with an MSEE in 1985 the starting wages in the bay area for that degree were around $35K/yr which is $17.5/hr. With just a BSEE two years before, the job offers I got were around $26K/yr so $13/hr. And guess what, houses in the Bay Area were going in the $200K range, and that is Sunnyvale, not the poorer regions of the time.
