Yah, we know. The Fed raises interest rates (no big surprise) and the markets get the vapors (NASDAQ composite off -5.6% for the week). But Biotechs weren’t effected quite as much: S&P Biotech down -4.6%, and the NASDAQ Biotech down only -1.2%. I guess Biotech’s don’t carry a lot of debt. (Or at least the medical field is less sensitive to inflation.)

The best contest portfolio stock for the week, APTO up +40%, was propelled by a 3rd quarter “Earnings” report where they lost significantly less money than last year, and the “exceptional execution” of a Phase 1/2 trial for an anti-leukemia drug (not so much about the actual clinical performance of the studied drug). All of the Top Five performers for last week were still substantially in the red YTD, the best of them, ARCT, at -37%.

Interestingly, all top Five YTD Stocks are held by only a single portfolio, and of these only BRENDAN_49 and HORSEINALFALFA partially owe their current membership in the top ten YTD portfolios, to having chosen one of the year’s big winners. But all ten successfully avoided the really big losses of the worst 5 performing stocks.

Only three contest portfolios were in the black for the week, the best, JFM WINTER, up only +4.8%. The median Portfolio shaved -4.1% in value, beating the NASDAQ Composite but substantially worse then the NASDAQ Biotech index. All of the Top Ten YTD portfolios lost money from -1.2% to -5.6%, with no additions to the list for the week, though some rearrangements for third to tenth place. First place DIEGOSAN’s -3.1% slide for the week dropped his YTD performance into a net loss.

With only eight more weeks, the Contest is entering the home stretch. Stay tuned.
