Right - Toyota is saying, like you, that with a hybrid they can still get benefits of plug in for daily commute but also get range for longer trips, and the efficiency advantage is they can have a smaller, lighter, and cheaper battery. Plus the batteries last a lot longer if they don't go to extreme drain or full charge all the time. The result is a lower cost, more efficient car over lifecycle of car ownership. But greenies hate it because it still uses some gas and breaks the vision of full solar, windmill reliance with no fossil fuels. This isn't happening anyway but they attack Toyota for popping the bubble.
