Hey, Lua just became the president for a 3rd terms and 3 years ago he was in jail for corruption...not that I disagree with his politics, just with his implementation, but still.

There was a Turkish satirist by the name of Aziz Nassin. He had a short story about two guys running for the mayor. The first guy was corrupt but did a great job of covering his tracks. The other guy was honest and relatively unknown. The bad guy runs a dirty smear campaign accusing his rival of having multiple wives, applying for government funds he did not qualify for, and all sorts of seedy acts (which were of course false). At the same time, he portrays himself as God-country-family values kind of person.

The good guy refuses to deny any of the accusations. Nor does he go on an offensive showing how big of a crook his rival is. In the end, the good guy is elected. When the surprised media interviews the voters, they reply that we want someone sharp who can handle two wives and a mistress and get rich on the back of the government rather than a sucker who just sticks to old fashioned values.

The joke/point he was making was that it is not so much that the elections are rigged or that the people are deceived by the politicians, but that we knowingly vote for the bad guys.
