All large engineering companies suffer from the NIH (not invented here) syndrome. IBM has been known to throw billions of dollars away trying to keep their stillborn technologies alive (OS/2 is just one example.)

The car industry suffers the same problem. However, sooner or later, some smart manager or marketing person at one of the big automakers will decide that he can make a name for himself by doing something intelligent. That is the instant when new technologies from outside the company become viable.

Once the new technology is brought into a single company, the management of their competitors will panic and sign on as well.

I hope that Ford will be the first company to crack the NIH barrier, but it really doesn't matter. Sooner or later one company will, and fuel efficient automobiles will become a reality.
