Racking a diesel engine is how the mixture is enrichened. 3/4 rack
just means that only 3/4 of the total amount of fuel possible was being
injected. If you want economy this is what you would do. If you
want power, you use 100%, but you lose economy. Certainly every
possible strategy was used to make the record attempt. But, don't
athletes give it their all in the 100 meter dash? After BAT attracts
the attention of a sponsor, I am sure that real world evaluations
will take place, and the engineers will then do everything possible
to cause the engine to fail, so that they can engineer against failure.
The engine will tested under far less than ideal conditions because
the real world is where the consumer drives. If they can get 75
miles to the gallon in real world driving, they should be happy.
