Ken! It seems like yesterday, but it was almost a year ago, my computer kept hanging. Mostly on the web, but mine was strangely correlated with power up, if it got through the first 5-10 minutes it was usually ok for a while. Needless to say, it drove me nuts. People sometimes say I used to be more mellow about Microsoft . . .

I would recommend the classic Microsoft maintenance procedure. Reinstall Windows. If that doesn't work, reformat the disk and reinstall. If that doesn't work, well, got me. I won't go quite so far as to say that Windows is corrupt, but it certainly seems eminently corruptible.

Cheers, Dan.

K.M. -

If I wanted to 'fix' (assuming that a 'total rewrite' was not possible) W95 (W98) to perform the way that 'it should', what would be the first on the 'hit' list?

I'm not much for Windows knowledge, but IMO, one of the things I'd fix first is the windowing system. I don't care what it looks like (well, I do, but that's not the point), but I care how it works. Having a network transparent windowing system would be a major improvement in Windows. Implementing something like a general protocol, to be separated from a window manager type thing, would also be a step in the right direction. Then again, what I'm describing is X ;)

The latest and greatest version of the Webster's Dictionary now has an
entry for Windows 95

Windows95 (noun): 32 bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16 bit
patch to an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit
microprocessor, written by a 2 bit company, that can't stand 1 bit of
competition.

Of course that was fixed by 'hard
reset' since <ctrl><alt><delete> didn't work!)

I understand your frustration and my advice is to upgrade your system to NT if you can. There are some games that won't work well under NT but then you could set up a dual boot system. I had a crash today and NT allowed me to end the task of the offending app. In this case it was caused by my kid setting the display to true 32bit color then when I accessed a site with Java, I crashed, using Communicator. NT, at least for me feels more like OS/2 4.0 in terms of stability but OS/2 won't run my CAD applications so NT is the next best thing.
