Prigozhin - in the US, I believe, he’s still under indictment - accused of helping Trump “steal” the 2016 election. A close friend of Vladimir Putin. He is the founder of the “Wagner group” - which plays a significant role in the Ukraine war. Also, those were his troops that were directly attacked by the US forces in Syria and suffered several casualties. No one quite knows the details, it seems - but, it was a way to push back against the Russians - and it was successful - the Russians knew what happened, but since no member of their Armed Forces was harmed, they didn’t need to attack back in order to save face. Afaik, that was the only direct confrontation between the US and Russia in Syria.

I followed the Institute for Study of War early in the Ukr war, but thought their coverage was strongly biased. You just couldn’t get a straight picture. It’s run, btw, by Victoria Nuland’s sister in law.
