I don't think [Sullivan] he's got any real leverage against the Russians.
What leverage could he have? At this point, they are, in effect, at war with the entire Western world - What leverage can one man have?

For too long, the US had too many restless and ambitious souls employed in our foreign affairs establishment - starting with Carter’s buddy Zbig Brzezinski. He told everyone in this line of business to keep pressuring the Russians - until they’re so damaged that they’ll never stand up again as a major power. And for several decades - monkey see, monkey do - it never occurred to anyone that there may be a better way.

Even now, with thousands of people dying - the attitude is “Oh how cute! Jakey Sullivan is out there talking to the Ruskies!” Yeah, moron, at least he’s trying. He’s doing what was supposed to be your job for the past 3 decades. He’s talking to people. Conducting negotiations. Doing what they used to call diplomacy.

I never even liked the guy, but I give him credit for trying. I wish he’d done it sooner.
