Dear Jane :

About the subject where to give; there is much debate over whether the bible instructs us today to give to the local church the full tithe; and for the purpose of our discussion let's not even mention a certain percentage.

For me personally, right now at this moment, that issue is a "no brainer". Our church is " rockin and rollin ". We pack out the 11:00 service even after adding a 9:00 service last year, and after adding 100 seats to the balcony last year. We added a $50,000.00 lighting system to the parking lot;; talk about letting your light shine, we have visitors come in for evening services just because they " saw the light ". We made the parsonage into offices to free up more sunday school room space, which we are running out of. We also are continuing to pay the salary of our deceased pastor to his widow, so we are having to come up with two salaries right now, this arrangement was made for six months. So I know they need it and will use it wisely which frees me up right now. When I paid my tithes this week, I really felt I wanted to give more so last night when I went to Wed night services I put in another $25.00 in cash, just because I had it to give. ( I don't mind telling you my business "stinks" right now but we walk by faith and not by sight; right. )

So I guess my point is this. If you don't feel comfortable tithing to your local church, pray about it , and ask the Lord for guidance, He will either free you up by dealing with it or possibly lead you to another church where you will freely give what He commands.

I want this thread to be a light to the world, and I want us to be givers in every area of our lives including our finances.

May the Lord richly bless you, do you wish to have a another vehicle or do you wish to have the lord extend the life of the one you have. (I have two new vehicles but like to drive around in an old van so if the doors get beaten off the old thing I don't mind. The other day I hit a concrete and steel post and almost took the bumper off. I just drove on, if I would have been driving my New Yorker I would have been sick.) So there are advantages to driving around an old car, lots of them. In Christ.gregor

Jane, if you don't feel comfortable that your church will use the money for God's purposes, why do you go there? I don't mean this as a rhetorical question. A few years ago I was in a church which took in pretty darn good funds but spent practically nothing on missions or anything else. The pastor got a large salary from a small congregation, and anything left over went to social events for church members. The final straw was when they gave the "youth orchestra", newly formed and with about 10 members, a $5000 budget, while they cut back the payment to the only missionary they supported, to something like $100-month. At that point I had lost any faith that that church was using the money to do God's work. I found a better church.
