In every human group (chess club, pool party, business meeting, etc.) there is a dress code (formal or informal). Violate the code, and you will be excluded, ostracized, shamed. Maybe burned at the stake as a witch.
My father was an attorney, including a City Attorney, in Michigan for 55 years. He dutifully wore a suit and tie to work every day. As soon as he was home, he shed the outfit for jeans and t-shirt. He explained it as his “buffalo robe theory.” When the plains Indians hunted Buffalo, they would often sneak up on the herd disguised in buffalo robes so as not to frighten the buffalo or trigger them to attack the hunters. He said wearing the suit and tie was very similar - he didn’t want to upset the herd or be ostracized, so he dressed as they expected him to dress.
