Hurricane Ian in 2022 was no stronger than Hurricane Donna in 1960 (both CAT 4's) although it weakened when hitting the Key's. There is no difference in the rate to intensify (this depends on the set up - Hurricane Andrew intensified quickly to a CAT 5 back in 1992).

The difference between now and then is the increased population / development, especially in coastal areas.

In the 1980's I remember a Florida claims adjuster commenting on don't life within 5 miles of the coast.
