Ken, since I'm answering for people here, if you decide to do the full reformat, you should reinstall from scratch. If you just restore from a backup, you'll restore any corrupt system files too. You'll need to restore user files of course.

Sal's right that it's better to do the reformat and get a clean system, but it's such a pain, you may want to just reinstall over the existing system and see if it fixes the problem. Foo on FAT, I say.

If I were doing it, I'd like to have the cleanest system possible. So it depends on when you did that backup.
