I don't recall anything about Nugan Hand bank, deaths, disappearance etc. But do recall the Oz Governor General firing Gough Whitlam and calling elections. USA is notorious for doing what RussiaRussiaRussia didn't do but has had war declared on it despite not doing, namely interfering in foreign elections, funding terrorist operations and coups to overthrow those USA USA USA dislikes. NZ prime minister David Lange complained about "obscene pressure" being put on him by USA. Don't know what it was but USA is not the lovey dovey good guys some assert. Lange caved to the pressure. The only big terrorist attack ever in NZ was by France with UK/USA complicity in the bombing of Rainbow Warrior at berth in Auckland harbour. Ernie was murdered by a suitcase bomb in the trades hall building when he moved it. = that was the only other one. Actually there's now a third which was the revenge on Islam's murderous jihad attacks at a mosque by Brendon Tarrant. The political deadlock in Oz showed the one crucial advantage of a royal family = a royal family wants political stability for decades and centuries. When political push comes to shove, the King can be called upon to take charge, give the police and military instructions to maintain order and call new elections to see who They the People would like to have in charge. A good monarch such as Queen Elizabeth II would have the undoubted backing of the population who generally do NOT want carnage and civil war. A political hack appointee would not have the street cred. On the other hand, King Charles Spaniel doesn't have street cred either. He makes me think of ways to develop a USA style constitution to limit the political aspirants. Tradable Citizenship would be a good start. Citizenship as property rights, not serfdom. Nugan Hand was a very compromised institution because of its money laundering operations on behalf of the CIA. As the US tried to extricate itself from the Vietnam War, the CIA had difficulty funding all of its black ops in Asia. A natural source of profits became the drug warlords in the golden triangle of Burma/Thailand. The drugs were funneled out through Chiang Mai, Thailand on military aircraft and the money was laundered primarily through Hugan Hand (and probably others). I was not involved in the political end of the money train, but I speak from first-hand knowledge because I was in and out of Chaing Mai over several years. I became disgusted with the intelligence community that it would contribute directly to drug addiction in our own children. As a result, I got out of the business in 1978 and have been happy with the decision!
