Scumbria,

You're on the wrong thread for these questions, but I'll answer them anyway.

1. they estimate 7% improvement on integer performance

2. estimate double the floating point

3. they will be using the same 24 instructions as AMD, Cyrix is the current thinking

4. in the second half of '98 they plan to be on 0.25, I'd guess 5 layers, est. 60mm&#178 die size

5. don't know

6. doubtful, an Intel cross-license is the only way they could do it

A must-read

Thanks to Foad for his post! Time to load some cheap INTC put just in case that Intel lost the TCI set-top bid deal.

Scumbria,

I didn't know the 4700 IDT makes, runs WebTV systems(that WSJ article). I'm starting to think IDT is well positioned in the MPU arena, but what about the commodity side of their business? Do you have any info about what their manufacturing potential is? Are they going to divert resources from the commodity end of the business to their logic parts?

TIA,

Bob

I won't get much into much of a discussion about the architecture of the chip because I think it is far less important than whether IDTI is building parts that meet a sufficient need in the market and whether they can sell them profitably.

1-2] The C6 will use some more advanced features that are supposed to boost FP and MMX performance by about 2x at a given frequency. Again, they are turning away large orders for the C6 parts. You can look at that any way you want - perhaps coming to the conslusion that the C6 is not in the league of the M2 or K6. Neither is the GX and it sells pretty well. Neither is a Ford Suburban a Mercedes, but that doesn't prevent them from being sold profitably. Techno jargon is only important if it relates to specific market needs.

3] AMD, Cyrix and IDTI have agreed to cooperate on the MMX 3D instructions (at the insistance of MS). IDTI expects to be one or two months behind AMD and 2-3 months ahead of Cyrix (you guys know more than I do about Cyrix' schedule) in coming out with their C6+ that will include the enhanced FPU, & MMX 3D and faster core.

4] The C6 is the most manufacturble Pentium class part - already achieving higher yields than any other competitor, including Intel. The primary goal is to take advantage of IDT's "core competencies". IDTI is recognized as having some of the best process technology in the industry. Ask your friends within Cyrix or IBM what they think of IDT's capabilities. My opinions don't carry their weight.

5] IDTI is looking at three potential fab partners. One of the criteria for bringing value to the relationship is that they hold an Intel cross-license. Some of the Japanese companies have Intel c-ls but I don't know which, if any, firms in other Asian countries hold them. Samsung maybe, Hyundai, TSMC and several others probably not.
